Aftermarket exhaust brakes are used to slow down a truck without using the traditional axle brakes. Instead, diesel exhaust brakes work by restricting the exhaust flow, causing exhaust back pressure to build inside the engine cylinders, which then slows down the truck through the power train. Electric exhaust brakes increase safety and drivability by slowing down the truck over long or short periods of time without applying the traditional brakes. They also lower overall vehicle maintenance cost and minimize damage to the traditional axle braking system.
